Kupe.
Kupe was a rangatira of hawaiki that loved a woman of hawaiki her name was Hine-Te-Aparangi but she was with another man of hawaiki his name is Hoturapa. Kupe, Hine-te-aparangi, Hoturapa and Ngahue went fishing on Matawhaorua when they were fishing Kupe said to Hoturapa “Hoturapa can you free the nets there are tangled in the sand” so Hoturapa went to free the nets and Kupe left Hoturapa to drown. Kupe, Hine-Te-Aparangi and Ngahue stumbled across land after many of months and Hine-Te-Aparangi said “He Ao He Ao He Aote He Aotearoa” The land of the long white cloud they landed in Hokianga harbor Kupe made Hokianga his home Kupe planted kumara in Hokianga to have Peace with Rongomatane. Kupe became one of the rangatira of Hokianga. Which made Kupe one of the first in Northland. Before kupe lift Hokianga Kupe placed his son Tiputipuwhenua in a Pona called Te Pona o Te Ao Marama. Which made Kupe son Tiputipuwhenua became the guardian of Hokianga Kupe after 40 years went back to hawaiki and named Hokianga Te Hokianga Nga Kupe. When Kupe got back to Hawaiki he gave Matawhaorua to Nukutawhiti. Nukutawhiti and his crew rebuilt Matawhaorua. Kupe renamed Matawhaorua to Ngatokimatawhaorua. Kupe told Nukutawhiti to follow two Taniwha Niwa and Araiteuru. Nukutawhiti got to Hokianga he did a karakia called E Kau Ki Te Tai E to get passed the three waves Kupe made. Te Ngarunui, Te Ngaruroa and Te Ngarupaiwhenua. These waves were there to stop people from coming into his land. When Nukutawhiti got to Hokianga Niwa turned into the sand bay and Araiteuru turned into the land. Ngatokimatawhaorua was accompanied by Mamari waka.

Just some little advice for you. Hope you have a great day. Here is my blog if you would like to check it out. Just copy and paste. :p http://kpsmaumaharah.blogspot.com/
